Need to know: UK’s First Documented Twins with Different Fathers Share Their Story

  • Sisters Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne have revealed they are the UK’s first documented case of twins with different fathers, declaring “we’re miracles”.
  • The extraordinary pair shared their story on BBC Radio 4’s The Gift, explaining how DNA tests confirmed they were half-sisters despite being twins. They are among fewer than 20 recorded cases worldwide of heteropaternal superfecundation, where multiple eggs are fertilised by sperm from different men.
  • Michelle first questioned her paternity after noticing she looked nothing like the man she thought was her father, James. The DNA results arrived on the same day as their mother’s death in February 2022, revealing James wasn’t her biological father.
  • Instead, Michelle’s real dad was Alex, a friend of their mother’s brother who had struggled with addiction and homelessness. But when Lavinia saw photos of Alex’s family, she felt the same disconnection Michelle had experienced with James.
  • Lavinia’s own DNA test revealed another shock – neither James nor Alex was her father. Michelle tracked down Arthur, who turned out to be Lavinia’s biological dad, and the pair now meet several times a month.
  • Lavinia shared: “I feel like I’ve found a place to belong, and that place is with my dad.” The twins reflected on their unique bond, with Lavinia saying: “The fact that Michelle and I survived whatever that process was and are here to tell the tale – we’re miracles.”
