Married trainer ‘had intercourse with teen pupil in classroom and promised to depart husband’
Heather Mashburn-Smith, 37, admitted to having sex with the boy while telling police she knew he was ‘just a teenager,’ an affidavit said. She’s now faces up to 30 years in prison
A married teacher confessed to having sex with an underage student in her classroom and promised him she would leave her husband for him when he turned 18, court documents reveal.
Heather Mashburn-Smith, 37, admitted to engaging in sexual activities with the boy, acknowledging that she was aware he was “just a teenager,” according to an affidavit.
The illicit relationship began after the 17-year-old student complimented her on Snapchat, telling her she was “pretty.” The teenager subsequently visited Mashburn-Smith’s classroom where they kissed and had sex twice, the documents disclosed. During these encounters, the teacher expressed her intention to leave her husband once the student reached 18 – the legal age of consent in Florida.
However, the boy grew uncomfortable and ceased communication with Mashburn-Smith, even blocking her. Despite this, she continued to send him messages on Snapchat.
Mashburn-Smith later confessed to the police about the inappropriate encounters, stating she “made a mistake,” She then reportedly claimed that the student made her feel desired, reports the Mirror.
The teacher has since been charged with unlawful sexual activity with minors. Under Florida law, this offence could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell condemned her actions, stating: “What this woman has done is not just unlawful, it is damaging to the students and staff around her.” The school district also confirmed that she has been suspended from her teaching duties.
In a statement, Charlotte County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Vianello said: “The actions of this individual are a direct violation of the duty every educator owes to students and families.
“We will not tolerate anything that compromises student safety. This individual has been placed on administrative leave as we work closely with law enforcement and pursue full accountability.”
This is just one of several cases in the US where a married teacher has been accused of engaging in sexual relations with an underage student. Teacher Nicole Hernandez, 30, also known as Nikki Baird, is alleged to have groomed a boy she met at a middle school in Kansas.
They later crossed paths again at Wichita North High School where Hernandez reportedly befriended the teen and “isolated him from others.”
According to an affidavit, she was allegedly “touching or rubbing” the student’s back or shoulders before coercing him into hugging her. The affidavit further alleges that the teacher began having sex with the teenager in early 2024.
