Five men were injured, one critically, after a car was driven at a group of pedestrians following an ‘argument’ in Arnold town centre, Nottinghamshire, police said
A man is battling life-threatening injuries after a car was driven into a group of pedestrians following an “argument” in a town centre, according to police.
Nottinghamshire Police reported that the incident involved a red Vauxhall Astra and occurred in Market Place, Arnold, at 1.12am on Saturday, subsequent to an “altercation” in the town centre shortly before.
The vehicle struck a group of individuals, leaving one man with life-threatening injuries and four other men with less severe injuries. The car was deserted at the scene post-incident, with the driver then absconding on foot, police stated. Officers have identified a suspect – thought to be a white man – and are currently attempting to locate him. Counter terrorism police are not participating in the investigation, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, commented: “Although there is no wider risk to the public, this was a serious incident which will have caused concern in the community.
“We believe an argument has taken place in Arnold town centre and this has resulted in a car being driven at a group of people.
“We know five people were injured but we’d still like to hear from anyone else involved.
“Any witnesses who were in Arnold Market Place, or the wider town centre area around this time, should also get in touch.
“We’d appeal to anyone with relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage to speak to an officer.
“A number of roads are closed while investigations continue and we’d thank people for their understanding.”
Road closures have been put in place in Arnold town centre as police probe the incident.
Market Place, along with junctions from Gedling Road to Derby Street, Hallams Lane and Central Avenue were cordoned off on Saturday morning.
The police have stated that these closures will be maintained for a considerable period, and drivers are being advised to steer clear of the area.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information pertaining to it is encouraged to share this directly with the police by dialling 101 and quoting incident 46 of May 9.
