Boy, 16, dies minutes after consuming ice cream as police ‘seize gelato tubs’ from retailer
Adriano D’Orsi, 16, suffered a severe allergic reaction after reportedly eating ice cream with friends in Casoria, Italy — police have seized several tubs from the gelateria as part of an investigation
A 16-year-old lad went into anaphylactic shock and died within minutes after eating ice cream with his mates.
Adriano D’Orsi and his two friends popped into their regular ice cream parlour on their way home following a carefree evening on Saturday (May 16). The initial signs of a serious breathing reaction emerged instantly after the teenager’s opening spoonful.
He pleaded with his friends for assistance, and they helped him as they dashed to his father Mauro D’Orsi’s house. There, Mauro frantically attempted to rescue his son’s life by giving him cortisone, but it proved futile. When paramedics reached Casoria, Italy, Adriano had already lost consciousness and all revival efforts were unsuccessful following the serious reaction.
Adriano was aware he suffered from a severe allergy to milk proteins and allegedly always exercised extreme caution with his food choices.
His mother, Antonietta Esposito, told local media: “Since he was little, he had episodes we couldn’t explain.
“Then, after tests, we discovered his allergy. But Adriano adapted very well. Before eating anything, he would carefully read the label and never made mistakes.
“Adriano used to go to that ice cream shop, and the staff serving the cones were aware of his severe lactose intolerance and would steer him towards the lactose-free tubs.
“But he told me that he always read the labels anyway.”
Adriano is believed to have eaten dairy-free fruit ice cream, as reported by NeedToKnow. However, it’s possible that traces of milk may have contaminated it, either through the scoop or the ice cream machine.
Police have confiscated several tubs of ice cream from the gelateria as part of their ongoing investigation.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the precise cause of death.
Adriano was in his third year at the nautical institute in Bagnoli and harboured dreams of becoming a ship captain.
Antonietta added: “He knew what he wanted to do with his future. He used to tell me, ‘Mum, in two years I’ll take you travelling around the world, you’ll see…’
“Now all of that is gone. Adriano was a wonderful boy. A perfect son, the kind many mothers would wish for. And I was lucky enough to have him.”
