Liverpool information: Reds issued Arne Slot sack instruction as star makes switch U-turn

Liverpool are set for a busy summer as pressure continues to build on Arne Slot’s shoulders following the Reds’ miserable title defence as his ideal successor emerges

Liverpool are gearing up to make a splash in the summer transfer window following a woeful season. Arne Slot’s team ended with 24 points fewer than their title-winning campaign last season, marking a dreadful defence of their Premier League title.

The club did secure Champions League qualification with their 1-1 draw against Brentford on Sunday, but did so while recording their lowest points tally (60) in over a decade. Even without the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, the upcoming window was always going to be pivotal for Slot’s future.

The Reds are likely bracing themselves for another expensive summer of business, just a year after they forked out £450million on new signings. Amid ongoing discussions about Slot’s position and the latest development in a club legend’s departure, the Daily Star Sport looks at the most recent stories emerging from Anfield.

Slot’s dream successor identified

Arne Slot appears set to remain at Anfield ahead of his third season as Reds manager later this year, but that hasn’t stopped speculation about his future. The club’s miserable season leaves Slot needing his team to hit the ground running in August, or else talk about his position will intensify, according to former Liverpool star Danny Murphy, who has also advised his old club on the ideal candidate to replace him.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy commented: “If Slot doesn’t start well, it [pressure] is going to start again. I don’t think he’s got a big say in the players [recruitment], by the way. But I think he’s going to have some sort of say in the players that come in.

“But if he starts poorly and they’re languishing in fifth, sixth after eight games, it’s over.” When questioned whether he would have contemplated appointing imminent Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso at Anfield, Murphy suggested the dream appointment for the Liverpool dugout should be Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique.

He elaborated: “I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Luis Enrique. Well, if Enrique wins the Champions League again, what more can he do?”

“He must be bored there, playing in a Mickey Mouse league where he wins every week. All he’s looking forward to is the Champions League. He must crave more challenge, surely?”

Alisson exit twist

The Reds have already bid farewell to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson as rumours indicated Alisson Becker could have completed a trio of departures after he was linked with a move to Juventus.

But the Brazilian shot-stopper, whose deal at Liverpool runs out next season, could still be poised to prolong his eight-year stay at Anfield according to the latest update from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The Italian revealed that the Reds have informed the 33-year-old that they are eager for him to remain for next season.

It is understood that while the keeper is attracted by approaches from the Italian heavyweights, a reluctance to damage his bond with Liverpool might result in him staying for what would be his ninth campaign on Merseyside.
