Paranoid man tortured 93-year-old pal to loss of life over ‘Irishman’ conspiracy

Samuel Michael Field, 40, has been jailed for life after murdering his 93-year-old best friend, Martin Glynn in a sickening 10-hour torture attack at his Desborough flat

A 40-year-old man has been jailed for life after murdering his 93-year-old best friend by subjecting him to more than 10 hours of torture. Samuel Michael Field carried out a sustained assault on Martin Glynn inside his flat in Desborough in September 2024, convinced his mate of 20 years had somehow betrayed him.

Mr Glynn sustained multiple brain haemorrhages and a broken neck, tragically dying three months later from his wounds. At Northampton Crown Court on Friday, Field was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years.

The court heard on September 19, 2024, Mr Glynn travelled by bus from his home in Kings Heath, Northampton, to Field’s flat in Gold Street, Desborough. It was a two-hour trip he undertook at least once weekly to see his friend.

But on this visit when Mr Glynn arrived, Field was somehow wrongly convinced his best mate had betrayed him to an unidentified “Irishman,” reports the Mirror.

Field’s mental state had deteriorated in the months beforehand and, with his paranoia escalated, he turned violent when Mr Glynn, failed to admit to the conspiracy, the court was told.

After battering, booting and stamping on the victim’s head, Field throttled him, breaking a bone in his neck and leaving him with serious bruising and swelling across his face and body. Footage from a concealed camera within the property revealed Field behaving as if nothing had occurred while Mr Glynn’s feet were visible as he lay still on the floor.

Late on September 20, more than 24 hours following the attack, Field rang East Midlands Ambulance Service multiple times and gave a complete admission, leading the call handler to contact Northamptonshire Police.

Field remained outside the property awaiting officers’ arrival and, upon arrest, informed them he had “assaulted someone” and “I know what I have done”. Despite being cautioned, Field carried on telling them what had taken place.

Within the flat, officers discovered Mr Glynn in the bathroom. He seemed bewildered about how he had suffered the severe facial wounds. He was transported to Northampton General Hospital, where medics diagnosed multiple brain bleeds and a broken neck.

Field was charged with Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent and was held in custody by Northampton Magistrates’ Court on September 23 before the matter was sent to the crown court for trial.

Tragically, Mr Glynn never made a recovery from the wounds he received during the assault and passed away on December 26. Throughout the trial, Field opted to represent himself and sacked his defence counsel before choosing not to offer a defence.

This left the jury with no alternative but to find him guilty of murdering Mr Glynn. Following the conviction, Detective Sergeant Megan Scotney said: “Samuel Field described Mr Glynn as his best friend of almost two decades.

“However, instead of looking out for Mr Glynn, Field exploited their friendship and tortured the 93-year-old over 10-hours, inflicting the most horrific injuries on a vulnerable man, which ultimately cost him his life.

“Mr Glynn lived independently and through his loyalty to Field, travelled more than two hours from his home in Northampton to Desborough at least once, sometimes twice a week to visit him.

“Only Field knows why he attacked Mr Glynn that day, but I am pleased the jury has seen him for what he truly is – a dangerous, violent man.

“Nothing can bring Mr Glynn back, but I very much hope this guilty verdict offers his loved ones some comfort. Our thoughts remain with them all in their grief.”
