Man Utd information: Transfer goal set for Real Madrid transfer as £80m deal in jeopardy

Manchester United are pushing for a major summer squad overhaul, with Bruno Fernandes publicly backing reported transfer target Rafael Leao while Real Madrid reportedly rival Man Utd for £80m-rated Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United’s latest transformation is gaining momentum as Old Trafford chiefs seek to bolster the squad this summer. Michael Carrick is understood to be close to securing Ederson’s signature, although the deal appears stalled following his recent selection for Brazil’s World Cup 2026 squad.

He’s certainly not their sole target, with rumours swirling across multiple fronts. The World Cup is set to trigger delays while players focus on international commitments, but that doesn’t render United completely powerless.

Indeed, developments are unfolding on all sides as two players sharing the same surname feature in this week’s biggest headlines. Mirror Football has gathered the key updates emerging from Old Trafford today, so you needn’t search elsewhere, reports the Mirror.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes has voiced his backing for rumoured target Rafael Leao following his recent dismissal drama. AC Milan’s winger Leao received a straight red for striking Chile’s Ivan Roman across the face during Portugal’s World Cup preparation friendly.

“Regarding my sending off, I simply wanted to protect my teammate and never intended to hurt the opponent,” wrote Leao in an Instagram update after the scuffle. “Thank you to all the Portuguese fans who were at Jamor; the atmosphere was incredible. We move forward together.” Some captains might be inclined to point the finger at the player for abandoning his teammates during high-pressure moments. Yet United skipper Fernandes opted for a contrasting approach in his reaction.

Responding to Leao’s post, the United talisman simply penned “Together.” That gesture alone seemed to encapsulate how the Portugal veteran is standing by his countryman despite criticism suggesting Leao ought to have displayed greater composure.

Leao, 26, is broadly anticipated to depart the San Siro following a challenging campaign with Milan. The forward has essentially acknowledged he’ll be seeking fresh opportunities after admitting Serie A’s style may no longer complement his abilities.

“I need a new challenge,” he recently told Sport TV. “In Italy, the league is evolving, but for my style of football, the Premier League or La Liga would better showcase my talent and me as a player.

“If the opportunity in the Premier League were to come my way, I would be very happy: I think I would be able to match my talent with players who are at a very high level.”

The other Fernandes making today’s headlines is West Ham midfielder Mateus, though his path to Old Trafford may have become more complex. That’s following Florentino Perez’s successful re-election as Real Madrid president on Sunday, which will see Jose Mourinho assume control at the Bernabeu once more. As a direct consequence of that development, it’s reported Los Blancos will pursue West Ham’s Fernandes for squad strengthening this summer. That could spell trouble for United given Real’s magnetic pull often proves impossible to resist.

With Perez’s presidency secured and Mourinho set to return, Real can now commence their summer overhaul in earnest. Perez has pledged major signings will arrive following a barren campaign in Madrid.

Fernandes, 21, won’t be available on the cheap considering the Hammers reportedly price their jewel at the £80million mark. Nevertheless, their Premier League demotion significantly undermines their negotiating position.

That offers a potential escape route for United, who may simply attempt to outspend their competitors for Fernandes. Yet the player could hold considerable sway in determining his destination when the summer transfer window concludes.

West Ham splashed out just over £40million to secure Fernandes from Southampton last year. It appears increasingly probable that several European giants will seek to lure him into another move merely 12 months on.
