‘I used to be within the Wimbledon Royal Box with David Beckham – here is what he was actually like’
A journalist was seated near David Beckham in the Wimbledon Royal Box and described the football icon as ‘very chatty and friendly’ after he brought his mum Sandra as his plus one
David Beckham mesmerised onlookers in the Royal Box at Wimbledon on Monday. The Inter Miami co-owner, who splits his time between the UK and USA, secured a front-row spot in the Royal Box to watch Jannik Sinner kick off his title defence against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid legend, 50, has turned attending the All England Club into somewhat of a ritual. In 2025, fashion influencer and journalist Joanne Hegarty found herself positioned close to the England icon in the Royal Box.
The Chic List columnist revealed, via HELLO: “Everyone there was looked after very well by the committee. And for me, it was exciting to watch the opening tournament game with celebrities like David Beckham.”
She then summed up Beckham with two words. She continued: “He was very chatty and friendly and brought his mum as a plus one.”
The Royal Box follows its own strict code of conduct that visitors must adhere to. Gentlemen must don a suit or jacket with tie, while ladies are asked to steer clear of hats that could obstruct the view of those sitting behind, reports Wales Online.
Hegarty revealed she even took cues from the Beckhams for her outfit. “I wanted to wear something smart and dressy,” she revealed.
“Something in crisp white was a forefront Wimbledon option. I wore a skirt by Toteme and ironically, my top is Victoria Beckham, which I passed onto David when I spoke to him!” This year, Beckham looked suave in a brown suit as he turned up with his mother, Sandra. The former midfielder attracted considerable attention and stayed true to his approachable character, pausing to snap countless photos with other guests, including former Great British Bake Off favourite Dame Mary Berry.
Beckham also organised a picture with his mum, before asking for a group photograph featuring Berry and Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Those keeping a keen eye may have noticed that just days before, Beckham was in attendance as England beat Panama at the World Cup in New Jersey/New York.
The former Three Lions skipper has been a regular presence at his country’s games throughout the competition. But it’s unclear whether Beckham will jet back across the pond for England’s crucial Round of 32 clash against DR Congo on Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia.
Should he choose to visit SW19 that day, it might create a slight problem. Wimbledon chiefs have suggested they will “discourage” VIPs in the royal box from keeping track of the World Cup, with England’s second-round match against DR Congo also not being shown on the venue’s screens.
Sally Bolton OBE, Chief Executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, said: “We’re not going to be showing the football on any of the big screens around the grounds, but clearly, if people have got their phones, then we’re not going to prevent people from watching the football.”
When asked if steps would be taken to stop VIPs in the royal box from using their mobile phones, Bolton stated: “We do discourage people in the royal box from using their phones anyway.”
