Erling Haaland scores personal aim over his assortment of World Cup purses

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – aka PETA- are far from impressed due to the range of exotic animal skins used to make these sorts of bags

Erling Haaland has scored an own goal with animal rights activists – over his collection of World Cup handbags. Norway’s stylish sharpshooter, who has already banged in five goals at the tournament, has been singled out for the vast array of man-bags he has been sporting off the pitch.

But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – aka PETA- are far from impressed due to the range of exotic animal skins used to make them. They are particularly livid at his Hermes Birkin bag collection.

The designer items are usually crafted from premium calfskin – with interior linings of goatskin. Rare ones can cost up to £75,000. PETA UK senior vice president Mimi Bekhechi said: “Erling Haaland might be ‘pitch perfect’ but his Hermès Birkin bag collection gets a red card from us and all the animals whose skins were stolen to make them.

“A champion should set a compassionate example, not display luggage that is the product of cruelty to animals and violence.

“PETA entities have documented workers hacking at crocodiles’ necks and ramming metal rods down their spines, chopping off conscious lizards’ heads, and confining cows to filthy pens before a terrifying trip to the abattoir – all so their skins can be turned into bags and other accessories.

“With so many young men looking up to and emulating their footballing heroes, Haaland could use his fame to help strike out cruelty rather than endorse it.”

TikToker Jack Savoie first highlighted 25-year-old Haaland’s bag collection.

In a video that quickly went viral he said: “Have you seen Erling Haaland’s custom Birkins?

“Baby, buckle up.”

Savoie said not all of the Manchester City star’s collection were Birkins.

Some are Haut à Courroies (HAC) – the model Birkin is based on – but slightly taller and narrower.

But it has triggered a debate over footballers’ bags.

One fan wrote: “I will never understand why a grown man wants to carry a handbag.”
