UK faculties affirm early closures as third heatwave to hit 36C – see full record

A number of schools in England and Wales have confirmed they will close early this week as the UK continues to be gripped by a third heatwave that could see temperatures hit 36C

Schools are starting to shut their doors early as the summer’s third heatwave takes hold. Following a record-smashing conclusion to June that triggered thousands of school closures, numerous schools across England and Wales have announced they’ll be finishing early this week.

A minimum of 13 schools will be sending pupils home early tomorrow as temperatures continue to climb throughout the UK. Children in Powys, Swansea, Swindon, Shropshire, London, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, and Bracknell will all be heading home at lunchtime on Thursday.

The Dorcan Academy in Swindon declared: “Following continued monitoring of weather forecasts and guidance from the UK Health Security Agency, we have made the decision to cancel all detentions for the remainder of this week.”

Chawson Community First School in Droitwich, Worcestershire, is shutting completely due to “extreme heat” within the building.

Temperatures are expected to peak on Thursday and Friday as the country swelters in the third heatwave of the year.

The Met Office said they will “widely exceed 30C” across the UK, while some areas in England could hit 36C.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree said: “Many people will understandably want to know how long the current heatwave is likely to last.”, reports Birmingham Live.

“While temperatures are expected to ease across southeast England through the weekend and into next week, it won’t be a straightforward end to the warm weather.

“High pressure is expected to remain in charge through much of next week, but it will gradually migrate northwards.”

Tom added: “This means that an easterly wind will become established in the south, and the focus for the hottest conditions will migrate towards the southwest.

“As a result, some places that have seen the highest temperatures during recent weeks will begin to cool. It will however, remain very warm – especially in the southwest – and heatwave thresholds may continue to be met in places.

“The overall signal is for continued fine, dry and very warm weather at times for many parts of the UK into next week. There is however a chance of thunderstorms spreading into parts of the south and southwest.”
