World Cup tragedy as woman, 17, dies after falling off truck and being hit by it

World Cup celebrations in France turned into tragedy as a 17-year-old girl reportedly “fell and was run over” by a truck following a private watch party for the World Cup game against Morocco

A 17-year-old girl has tragically been killed during World Cup celebrations following France’s win over Monaco in the Quarter finals of the tournament last night (July 9).

The girl reportedly fell climbed on the tractor-trailer the truck had attached to it. Several others, who had reportedly been at a private party with the girl, also jumped onto the trailer in the French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries.

As they celebrated France’s huge win, disaster struck as the girl reportedly fell from the trailer as it began to move and was then struck by the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports by some French publications claim she was she “fell and was run over”.

Local police took the truck driver into custody and have launched an investigation into the tragedy, according to French publication La Voix Du Nord. The 45-year-old driver was arrested “for the offense of road homicide.”

The tragedy reportedly took place 12:30am in the early hours of Friday (July 10). Emergency services were reportedly quickly on the scene but the girl’s life could not be saved. She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

According to France 3 Hauts-de-France, some others were taken to the hospital but no details have been given on their conditions. However, it is not believed they were seriously injured.

Laurent Dumaine, the Public Prosecutor, said: “The truck driver and some of his guests wanted to celebrate the victory of the French football team.

“They got into the cab of the vehicle and headed towards the town centre of Aulnoye Aymeries, where the population density limited their progress. “

Meanwhile back in England, a police officer was been hurt and several people were arrested after disorder in London on Thursday night following Morocco’s exit from the World Cup.

Police and fans clashed on Edgware Road in London after France beat Morocco 2-0 in a quarter-final match in Boston in the United States.

The Metropolitan Police said four people were arrested for violent disorder and one officer had been taken to hospital with a head injury after being hit by a glass bottle.
