Murder detectives have launched an investigation following the death of a man in a ‘violent and shocking’ early hours attack in a bar. Greater Manchester Police said that the fatal assault took place at a bar formerly named formerly known as Olivers Bar, now known as Blues Cabaret and Karaoke Bar, in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre.

Officers were called today (July 11) at 2.40am and discovered a man in his 30s with serious injuries. He died at the scene.

The deceased has not yet been formally identified, but the family of the man officers believe to be the victim have been informed. A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and remains in custody for interviews with detectives, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Police said they received reports of a ‘male having been seriously assaulted… inside Olivers Bar, Bow Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne’. “Officers… immediately started to provide first aid to the male victim who then became unresponsive and stopped breathing,” the force’s Major Incident Portal states.

“CPR was commenced but sadly the male was pronounced deceased at 03.48 hours.” A GMP statement added: “Upon attendance, we located a man in his early 30s with serious injuries but despite best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“One man, aged 36, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.”

The incident took place in the heart of Ashton, close to Ashton Market. Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb of GMP said: “This is was a violent and shocking attack that tragically took the life of a young man.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. We are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of this incident, and while no formal identification has taken place yet, the believed family of the victim has been informed and is being supported by our specialist officers.

“We currently have a man in our custody and a scene is still in place at this time. We would also like to reassure the community we believe this to be an isolated attack and poses no wider threat to the public.

“As we are still in the early stages of our investigation, we are appealing for anyone who may have information to please come forward and report. This can be anyone who may have witnessed the incident itself, or has any footage from the area that may support our enquiries.
