Nine UK areas set to boil in 35C warmth this week as new heatwave sweeps in – full checklist

The Met Office has said the UK is set to be hit by a “short spell of heat” this week, with temperatures forecast to reach 35C in nine areas on Wednesday as amber heat health alerts are issued

The incoming heatwave is set to scorch nine parts of the UK as yet another heatwave boils the country.

Britain is currently experiencing its fourth heatwave of the year, with a sizzling high of 35C expected to roast nine regions on Wednesday (July 29). The Met Office has suggested that it will be particularly balmy in the South East today (July 28), with temperatures widely predicted to hit between 29C-30C.

The peak of the heat is set to occur tomorrow, with top temperatures of 35C possible across south-eastern England. Amber heat health warnings have been issued for the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East for 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, yellow heat health alerts have been issued for the same period in the South West, West Midlands and Yorkshire & The Humber.

But not all areas of the country will experience this surge in temperatures with cloud cover and rain predicted in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Southern Scotland and Northern Ireland could witness heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms later today.

By Thursday, temperatures will have dropped for most parts of the nation, although those in the southeast will endure the hot weather for a bit longer, with the mercury forecast to reach 29C, meeting the heatwave criteria, reports the Express.

Current predictions suggest this will be a “short spell of heat” as by Friday, temperatures are expected to return to near average for this time of the year, and slightly below average in the far north. The south will experience the mildest conditions, courtesy of the persistent high pressure, though it will feel considerably different from the midweek peaks.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Gregory Wolverson stated: “This is a short-lived spell of heat, but temperatures will climb quickly through the first half of the week, particularly in the southeast.

“By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday.

“Elsewhere, the weather will be more changeable, and the change to cooler, more unsettled conditions will arrive sooner from the north and west, with a mix of sunshine and showers. Across northern areas, it is possible there will be heavier showers with a small risk of isolated thunderstorms through the week.”
