Coleen Rooney proclaims son Kai’s GCSE outcomes and his plans for the long run

Coleen Rooney has revealed that her son Kai has sailed through all of his GCSEs, as the Manchester United prospect continues to balance his academic commitments with his flourishing football journey.

The 16-year-old celebrated GCSE results day alongside his delighted mum, who posted on Instagram with a snap of the pair beaming together in her motor. Captioning the image, Coleen penned: “GCSE results day! ! Super proud @kairooney.10 ….Great results especially with a busy schedule, all passed and a place in 6th form! ! We love you.”

It marks another milestone achievement for Kai, who is working hard to maintain the perfect equilibrium between his scholastic pursuits and his dreams of emulating his father, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, reports the Manchester Evening News. Wayne himself never completed his GCSEs at Kai’s age, having been forced to take charge of his own learning while his football career was blossoming at Everton and Manchester United.

He previously told BBC Sport: “It’s no secret that I didn’t even take GCSEs but I think people assume because of that that I’m not educated, which is really wrong. I made a conscious effort when I was at Everton and Manchester United to educate myself in a lot of different things, such as black history and religion.

“The reason I did that was because I wanted to hold conversations with my team-mates who are from different backgrounds. That was something I did to help me with my team-mates and help understand how they have been brought up. That’s probably something people don’t understand about me.”

Teenager Kai, meanwhile, has been part of United’s academy since rejoining the club at the age of 11 and took another crucial step in his footballing journey last month when he penned a first-year scholarship deal.

That agreement enables Kai to continue his studies while advancing through United’s academy system, with the next significant landmark anticipated when he reaches 17 and becomes eligible to put pen to paper on a professional contract.

Kai’s footballing advancement was disrupted last season when he sustained a campaign-ending injury in March, sidelining him from United Under-18s’ FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City.

He had relished a breakthrough season before the blow, making his bow for Darren Fletcher’s under-18s at the age of 15 and netting twice while registering an assist across six Premier League Under-18 outings.

He also made his maiden appearance at Old Trafford last season, featuring for 21 minutes in United’s FA Youth Cup fourth-round triumph over Derby County.

The striker returned to the fold last week after completing his recovery programme, appearing in United’s squad for the Otten Cup in Eindhoven. Kai announced his comeback on Instagram with the caption: “First game back from injury. PSV (A).”

United suffered a 1-0 defeat to hosts PSV in their tournament opener, with Kai also included in a 23-man squad featuring Jacey Carrick, son of former United midfielder and current first-team boss Michael Carrick.

The youngster’s return arrives at a crucial juncture in his development, with United anticipated to rely heavily on him at Under-18 level throughout the new season.

Kai has also been forced to navigate the spotlight that accompanies being the son of one of United’s most legendary players.

Coleen previously stood up for her eldest son after he faced online criticism from individuals who implied his advancement had been aided by his celebrated family name.

The teenager, nonetheless, has continued to forge his own path within the academy.

He has shifted away from the central striker position his father occupied during his playing days and has increasingly featured on the flank, where he can drift inside onto his preferred left foot.

The immediate objective will be to capitalise on his successful injury comeback and cement himself as a mainstay for United’s Under-18s.

And while a first-team breakthrough remains considerably distant, Kai’s ongoing development through the academy has firmly positioned him on the watchlist of those monitoring the emerging generation of talent at Old Trafford.
