Arsenal kicked off their title defence in emphatic fashion by thrashing newly-promoted Coventry City. The visiting supporters were in fine voice but were swiftly silenced by their league-leading hosts. The Gunners broke the deadlock through Kai Havertz, who converted after excellent recovery play from Christos Tzolis and a delivery from Riccardo Calafiori.

The second wasn’t long in coming either, with more impressive work from Tzolis forcing the ball into the area where Bukayo Saka was perfectly positioned to convert. Martin Odegaard maintained his superb pre-season form, finding the net with his right foot to leave Rushworth stranded.

The triumph delivers an emphatic message to the rest of the division that the reigning champions are determined to keep hold of their title and will be a formidable proposition this campaign. Not forgetting they still have William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa all set to integrate into the squad as the season progresses.
