Arsenal are hunting for a new forward as the summer transfer window draws to a close, with a blockbuster swoop for Atletico Madrid hotshot Julian Alvarez in their sights.
The Gunners earned another three points in their second game of the new campaign as the reigning Premier League champions battled to a 1-0 victory away against Aston Villa with Bukayo Saka’s second-half goal the difference between the two sides. But a lot of eyes were on the Gunners’ bench, where last summer’s big £64m signing Viktor Gyokeres again remaining an unused substitute, just as he did in the 3-0 thrashing of his former club Coventry, hinting perhaps a new striker could be on his way.
Arsenal have already brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a back-up for David Raya, defender Ezri Konsa as cover for William Saliba, winger Christos Tzolis as an improvement on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, plus midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to share some of the load with Declan Rice this season. Arsenal received a lift in their chase for Julian Alvarez on Sunday after reports emerged claiming that Atletico Madrid are preparing for life beyond the Argentine forward.
The 26-year-old, whom the Gunners remain eager to make their record acquisition at approximately £128m, has yet to give Arteta confirmation that he wishes to make the switch, reports the Mirror.
However, Fabrizio Romano claims Atletico have acquired Jonathan David, 26, on loan from Juventus, with a “verbal agreement done”. Atletico are said to have secured an initial loan deal with a buy option clause for the Canadian striker, with the Spanish side covering more than 50% of his salary.
This could signal the La Liga outfit are viewing David as Alvarez’s successor, potentially spelling positive news for Arsenal supporters.
Given Atleti have prevented Alvarez’s desired transfer to Barcelona, Arsenal appear the most probable destination for the striker should he opt to depart the Spanish capital. Weekend reports suggested the player was handed a Sunday deadline to notify Atletico of his intentions in a bid to resolve the situation definitively.
Alvarez was absent from three squad training sessions last week due to what the club described as an “indisposition”, before working individually on Friday. Nevertheless, he was spotted back amongst his teammates on the training ground on Sunday, though no statement has been issued concerning his future.
Two clubs open talks for Nwaneri

Fenerbahce have initiated discussions with Arsenal regarding a deadline day swoop for Ethan Nwaneri – but it looks like they’ve been beaten to the punch.
Turkish publication Fanatik claims the 19-year-old has been identified as a potential acquisition by the Turkish heavyweights, as they seek to strengthen their midfield options.
Fenerbahce view Nwaneri as the perfect player to satisfy their U23s requirements. However, according to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, he’s heading to Germany instead.
He claims Borussia Dortmund have reached a verbal agreement to sign Nwaneri, with a season long loan agreed as Nwaneri accepted the possibility of joining the Bundesliga giants overnight.
And Romano suggests that Dortmund sources confirm the youngster’s salary will be entirely covered by the German club.
Arteta, who acknowledged the player requires further development through consistent game time earlier this month, favoured a temporary arrangement.
The speculation follows Sky Sports’ weekend report that Nwaneri would rather remain at Arsenal, or join another Premier League side, rather than venture overseas.
That’s thought to stem from his disappointing loan spell at Marseille during the latter half of last season. Yet Dortmund have a reputation for providing the perfect environment for young players to flourish.
