Scott McTominay to endure coronary heart surgical procedure as ex-Man Utd star’s situation revealed

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is set for a spell on the sidelines with the Scot needing to undergo a heart operation

Former Manchester United and Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay is set to undergo heart surgery.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed his time at Napoli since moving from his boyhood United in 2024 – winning the Serie A and the league’s player of the year. However, the Scot is set for a spell on the sidelines with him to undergo surgery to address a ‘mild arrhythmia’.

Napoli revealed McTominay’s condition in a statement, which reads: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break.”

Thankfully, it has been indicated that the ailment is not overly concerning, with numerous athletes experiencing similar issues. It is not anticipated to affect his future playing career.

McTominay, 29, emerged through the Manchester United youth system and went on to feature 255 times for the club after his breakthrough during the 2016/17 campaign. He found the net 29 times during his stint at Old Trafford.

The Scotland international joined Napoli for £25m in 2024 and has since enjoyed a remarkable spell of form in Italy, bagging 27 goals in 82 outings while claiming Serie A glory last term.

McTominay has also collected 73 caps for the Scotland national side and has netted 15 times. His latest appearance came for Napoli at the weekend, as they suffered defeat to Como on home soil.

Following the match, Napoli manager Max Allegri hinted that the midfielder had been troubled by blisters. He stated: “McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis. Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible.”

Napoli still have four more matches to contend with before the first international break of the season, which has been scheduled later this year. They first face Inter Milan this coming Saturday, followed by a Champions League encounter with Premier League champions Arsenal.

They then host Bologna before a crucial match against Fiorentina. Napoli currently occupy tenth place in Serie A after recording a win and a loss each from their opening two fixtures.

McTominay’s potential return to the squad could come against Frosinone on 10 October.

Napoli have experienced a tumultuous summer after finishing second last season. They dismissed Antonio Conte in favour of Allegri and have allowed players such as Miguel Gutierrez, Romelu Lukaku and Giovanni Simeone to depart the club.

However, they have been active in the transfer market, securing Rasmus Hojlund on a permanent deal, while Chelsea’s Benoit Badiashile has joined the club on a season-long loan agreement.
