A dad needed life-saving surgery after being horrifically mauled by a bear during a hunting trip. Jadon Nicoara, 27, said he filmed a short video on his phone saying goodbye to his wife and two daughters after the attack in northern Alaska, US.

The beast launched on Jadon as he and cousin Daniel were hunting caribou deer, knocking him backwards before biting and scratching at his face. Miraculously he was able to pull out his revolver and shoot the bear, which then ran off.

Daniel – who is a doctor – was able to get Jadon’s bleeding under control. Jadon said “he was sure he was going to die” and added: “God answered a prayer, and we feel very blessed.”

The horror unfolded last Thursday when the pair were hunting around 100 miles outside of Deadhorse. Four days into the trip, they were climbing up on the edge of a canyon when they noticed bushes moving.

As Jadon turned to his right, he said he saw the bear “running straight towards him”. He said: “It was growling, its mouth was open and it was just running full speed. I just felt it bite my arm, and it was very surreal because everything happens so fast.

“Then, it finally ended up on top of me, and it bit my face. It was just biting again and again, and I could hear all the bones crunching in my nose. I saw stars, and I was like, ‘OK, this is kind of where it ends.’ I thought I was going to be dead.”

The bear then began moving down his body, grabbing his hands and then his foot. Daniel emptied his magazine trying to shoot the bear, which then turned and went towards him, giving Jadon the chance to shoot towards the bear himself.

After the attack, Jadon managed to get to higher ground where he and Daniel could meet a helicopter. They were initially told it could take two hours for help to arrive. Jadon said he didn’t think he was going to make it due to his blood loss.

He told local media: “I pulled out my phone and filmed a short video for my wife and my girls, because I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I was bleeding really bad.”

Now home and recovering, he still bares the scars of the mauling. He still has cuts to his arms and legs and is awaiting facial reconstruction surgery sometime next week.

He added: “It just makes me thankful for the days that I have with my family. I was thinking about my wife and girls through the whole thing. They kept me going.

“It just makes me want to live my life in a way that counts, take each day as a gift from God, and live to share His love with other people.”
