A travel blogger has gone viral after refusing to swap her prized aisle seat for a fellow passenger who sobbed for three hours when she refused to swap seats on a long-haul flight. Tomiko Harvey said she was flying from Istanbul, Turkey to Washington, D.C., in the US, when a woman asked her to give up her pre-selected aisle seat, so she could sit next to her husband during the 10-hour-plus journey.

But Harvey didn’t budge. In a viral Instagram post, the blogger explained: “I refused to give up my aisle seat because a lady missed her husband.”

Harvey described the scene as “the ultimate white tears on a long haul flight from Istanbul to DC”, saying the woman burst into tears after being told “no”.

“I said no,” Harvey wrote. “She cried for three hours.” Harvey said she was stunned by the reaction and eventually asked what had happened. “I finally asked her if someone died, because who cries for three hours?” she wrote.

“She said nobody died. She just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on.” According to Harvey, the husband wasn’t even far away.

“Her husband was two rows up in a middle seat with his headphones on, sleeping in heavenly peace the entire flight,” she wrote. She added: “She really wanted me in a middle seat for 10 hours so she could lay her head on his shoulder.”

Harvey also revealed she was travelling under heartbreaking circumstances, saying she’d been “flying home from Kazakhstan on @turkishairlines because my dad passed away”.

“It’s why I look so terrible in this video,” she explained. After the flight landed, Harvey claimed she had one final comment for the weeping passenger.

“When we landed, I told her, ‘Good job. Look at you surviving without your husband for 10 hours,’” she wrote. Harvey subsequently questioned the entitlement.

She said: “What is wrong with people that they feel they can ask a stranger to switch seats, especially on a long haul flight? Is it rude to refuse to switch seats on a plane?

“If you want to sit together, book together or pay for seat selection.” She also joked: “Now I need to reevaluate my marriage because I clearly do not love my husband enough.”
