A British teenager who tragically lost his life on holiday desperately cried out for help as he found himself in difficulty at sea, an inquest has heard.

Mitchell Ogbourne, 19, went for a swim on October 13 while staying with his family at the Nusa Dua resort in southern Bali. An inquest held in Salisbury, Wiltshire heard, the teen had thought the sea was calm and shallow when he ventured out that day, before the situation took a devastating turn.

His parents were alerted to their son’s distress after hearing his screams from the shoreline, and they rushed out to pull him to safety. Tragically, the teenager was confirmed dead just hours later.

The Salisbury inquest heard that his parents, Lisa and Paul, swam out and dragged their son back to shore before performing CPR on the beach. The teen was subsequently rushed to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead that evening.

The family, from Swindon, had been enjoying their dream holiday in the southeast Asian nation when the tragedy unfolded, reports the Mirror.

His body was later repatriated, with a post-mortem examination confirming that the beloved teenager had died as a result of water submersion. Tributes have since flooded in for Mitchell, who was a member of Stratton Juniors Football Club in Swindon.

The club shared a post on social media stating that both the teenager and his father had been part of the team’s family “for many years”. In the tribute post, representatives said: “Mitch and his dad, Paul, have been part of the Stratton Juniors family for many years.

“During that time, they have built friendships and memories that extend far beyond the football pitch. Mitch leaves behind many friends and former teammates who remain part of our club, including within our senior section. There are simply no words to express the sadness we feel.

“To lose someone so young, with so much life ahead of them, is truly heartbreaking. Mitch was a wonderful young man who was loved, liked and valued by so many. His loss will be felt deeply throughout our football family and the wider community.”

The post continued: “Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Paul, Lisa, Mitch’s wider family, his friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“We cannot begin to imagine the pain they are going through, but we hope they find some comfort in knowing just how many people care and how deeply Mitch was loved.”
