World Cup legend kept cool as nude Hungarian model kicked ball to end communism

It’s not everyday that a nude Hungarian model kicks off a football match next to a World Cup legend.

Hungary and Colombia went head-to-head 30 years ago in a friendly clash that remains iconic. The fixture, played in early June 1990, came just months after the fall of the Berlin wall – and with it communism.

But to commemorate the end of communism in eastern Europe, match organisers opted for a fascinating approach. They decided to acknowledge the new-found freedom of women by letting a mostly- naked woman enter the field.

Prior to kick-off, the brunette beauty wearing nothing but a white thong and shoes strutted across the pitch towards the centre-circle. There awaited Colombia captain Carlos Valderrama, the iconic hero of the 1990 World Cup.

In stunning scenes and her boobs out for the players, referees and the whole of Budapest to see, she toe-punted the ball back into the Colombia half to end communism.

What is the most bizarre footballing memory you have from the 1990s? Let us know in the comments section.

Colombian legend Carlos Valderrama stood waiting and applauded her efforts

She strutted off as the stunned crowd applauded

A blushing Valderrama stood waiting close-by as he somehow remained as cool as ever despite the bizarre scenario he found himself in. He then applauded her efforts with enthusiasm before she made her way off the pitch.

The model’s appearance seemed to make all the difference as Hungary were inspired to a 3-1 victory over the South Americans.

The captain remained as cool as a cucumber

Unfortunately, the former Soviet-occupied nation did not make it to the World Cup that year. Their regular qualification matches lacked a similar pre-match display, though there is no telling what they would have been capable of had it become a regular occurrence.

Colombia meanwhile went on to reach the last-16 in Italy before being knocked out by Cameroon. Valderrama sprinkled his magic on the tournament when he beat several players in the last minute of a match against West Germany to set up a crucial equaliser, allowing Colombia to qualify out of their group.
