UK city dubbed ‘rundown dump’ named worst place to go to for a weekend

A UK town has been slammed as the worst place in the country to visit for a short stay.

“Rundown dump” Derby has suffered in respected consumer publication Which?’s recent study of the best and worst towns in the UK for a short jaunt. The East Midlands town has been shown very little love by the 3,967 Which? members surveyed, who slammed the spot with their ratings.

Pipping Leicester and Swansea to the undesirable title, Britain’s worst weekend away “scored poorly for food and drink, accommodation, cultural sights and tourist attractions, shopping and ease of getting around – all just two stars”.

Four months ago on Reddit, people responding to the question “What’s everyone’s opinions on derby s**t hole or decent city” were fairly clear.

One person said: “Derbyshire is lovely. Suburbs are pretty standard. A mix of good and bad, as with every city. Parks are really nice. City centre is grubby and full of addicts. It’s visibly about 20 years behind the likes of Leicester and Nottingham, in terms of investment.”

Another commented: “City centres crap. Most surrounding areas are nice”.

A second added: “S**t hole or total s**t hole would be a better question.”

Meanwhile, a third local resident noted: “Moved from Derby to Belper about 5 years ago. Best thing we ever did. I lived in Derby since the 70s and am well qualified to say the city centre at least has gone down the sh**ter. Having said that, looking around most UK cities the same has happened.”

Not everyone was completely negative, however. “If the city centre was busier – both in the day and in the evening – it would be great,” one person wrote. “The city is easy to navigate and the residential areas are generally safe. Good transport links by track too. But the city centre is suffering from neglect and can feel unwelcoming – even midweek”.

Another chipped in: “Lived in much worse. It feels like it would be a fantastic city if all the shops were filled and markets open. Just has a great layout and feel to it, can’t quite explain it.”
