England have had several great players and teams search for Euro and World Cup glory – and many of them have fallen short.
Despite the years of heartbreak, there is no question that despite the lack of silverware, some of these squads have contained our greatest ever players.
But who would make the best ever England squad? Instead of squabbling over it while sinking a few pints at the pub, we have chosen the much cheaper option of asking AI bot ChatGPT.

Before we narrow this down to a starting 11, we cam first take a look at the full 26-man squad, which ChatGPT claims “brings together a blend of legendary figures who have defined English football over the years.”
Here is the 26-man squad and ChatGPT’s reason for each:
Goalkeepers
- Gordon Banks – One of England’s greatest, instrumental in the 1966 World Cup win.
- Peter Shilton – England’s most capped player, solid and reliable between the posts.
- David Seaman – Known for his longevity and crucial saves, particularly in the 90s.

- Rio Ferdinand – Elegant on the ball, strong, and a key figure for England in the 2000s.
- John Terry – Commanding centre-back, known for his leadership and tackling.
- Tony Adams – Arsenal legend, strong, and reliable at the back.
- Ashley Cole – One of the best left-backs in the world during his prime.

Now you can’t really pick too much fault with that team as there are some amazing players in that squad (although our readers may have something to say about that).
But now the hard part, how on earth do you pick a team with that much talent to choose from…well it took Chat GPT about five seconds.
It also went against a traditional Mike Bassett-style 4-4-2 to have a more modern 4-3-3 formation.

“Midfield: Charlton’s creativity and goal threat, Gerrard’s dynamism and leadership, and Gascoigne’s flair ensure a balanced and potent midfield trio.
“Forwards: Beckham’s crossing ability, Rooney’s versatility and work rate, and Shearer’s goal-scoring prowess create a balanced and formidable attacking line.”
The bot continued to tell us that this team would have won a major tournament in its opinion.
