Former Man Utd star jumps to the defence of Bruno Fernandes’ spell as captain

Wes Brown has leapt to the defence of Bruno Fernandes – and told him he is the right man to be captaining Manchester United.

Fernandes has come in for some fierce criticism this season following two sendings off. To make matters worse, United have made a shocking start to the campaign, leaving Erik ten Hag battling to keep his job. But former England United defender Brown remains convinced Fernandes should be wearing the armband.

Brown told Instant Casino: “With Bruno Fernandes, I feel the positives outweigh the negatives. I’m not really concerned about the red cards. He’s that sort of player, and I’ve had players like that in my teams in the past.

The Portuguese international was given his marching orders in successive matches against Tottenham Hotspur and FC Porto recently, with the former overturned. But Brown praised the passion shown by United’s skipper.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing showing passion during games of football. He’s the captain of the club and we know what he can do. That flick around the corner for (Rasmus) Hojlund for the second goal against Brentford was lovely,” he continued.

“When we talk about individual players, a lot of it is to do with confidence. I feel like he had a better game on Saturday, and hope he can take that forward into the next game.

“We know what he can do. He can pick up assists and can score, and it was definitely one of his better games for the club this season. He leads by example and is a good club captain.”

United will be without their captain for their trip to Fenerbache on Thursday with his sending-off in their last Europa League tie coming from two yellow cards.
