Putin is trialling heavy-handed state-controlled internet coverage to stop “enemy” influences, a Kremlin insider has said.

In an apparent tip of the cap towards North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un’s leadership style, the Russian president is carrying out “exercises” to introduce a “sovereign internet” network while blocking out the internet “from the outside”. General SVR, a Telegram account claiming to be a source from within the Kremlin, added that exercises carried out so far were not up to scratch.

A translation of the post, which was shared today read: “Yesterday, Russian special services conducted the largest “exercises” to block the Internet. It should be noted right away that the exercises did not go according to plan and their results were considered unsatisfactory.”

General SVR went on to say that Kremlin officials were told of the plans back in September last year, when the project was cloaked in secrecy.

General SVR went on: “At that time, Russian presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev reported that active work was underway to introduce a “sovereign Internet” in the country and subsequently block the Internet “from the outside.”

“He also reported that he had given the go-ahead to conduct exercises to implement this concept, but in a regime of maximum secrecy, in which even he (Nikolay Patrushev) would not know the time when the exercises would start.”

General SVR said yesterday’s experiment resulted in a “significant” part of the sovereign internet being blocked, while a part of the “enemy” internet was unblocked.

“As a result, the exercises had to be interrupted, and the improvement work will continue,” he added.

According to General SVR, the aide Patrushev has expressed a desire to personally green light future tests and doesn’t know when the “sovereign internet” would come into effect.
