‘Broken’ Man Utd have had ‘profitable tradition’ stripped away underneath Ruben Amorim

Rene Meulensteen has echoed Wayne Rooney’s comments about Manchester United, claiming the club is ‘broken’ both on and off the field following their defeat to Brentford

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former right-hand man Rene Meulensteen has delivered a scathing verdict on Manchester United, declaring the club is fractured both on and off the pitch.

Meulensteen worked alongside Ferguson as first-team coach for five years during an era when United ruled English football and claimed Champions League glory.

He left Old Trafford alongside Fergie in 2013, with the subsequent 12 years witnessing the Red Devils’ gradual descent into mediocrity.

Following their poorest-ever Premier League campaign last term, the omens look bleak for further hardship under current manager Ruben Amorim. Their latest setback against Brentford marked their third defeat in six matches, leaving them stranded in the league’s lower reaches.

United legend Wayne Rooney declared earlier this week that he believes the ‘soul has gone’ from the football club and that fresh impetus was needed to revive their fortunes.

Meulensteen delivered an equally harsh assessment, arguing that the problems stretch well beyond their woeful on-field performances – directing some criticism towards United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, reports the Mirror.

Speaking on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, he said: “The club is broken in two ways. Everybody can see that they’re broken on the pitch, they come up against Brentford with a new manager, they’re finding their feet.

“If it was under [Thomas] Frank, you would know you’re in for a game against Brentford, he will throw the kitchen sink at you.

“Credit to Brentford, because they had a game plan and it worked a treat, and Manchester United has got zero ability to turn that around to some extent. They’re broken there.

“The club is also broken, off the field. The culture that I was part of and that Sir Alex built was a fantastic culture to be a part of, and it was a family, everybody together. Everybody was looking after each other, and everybody felt valued to some extent.

“All those things that have happened in the background, with the ownership, with Jim Ratcliffe coming in, the redundancies, the whole culture Alex Ferguson built for 26 years has been completely stripped away.”
