Woman killed and husband stabbed exterior Cork house as suspect ‘recognized to them’ detained

A 59-year-old woman has tragically lost her life and her husband is in a serious condition in hospital after they were reportedly attacked outside their Ballinlough home in Cork on Monday evening.

The couple were stabbed outside their Shrewsbury Downs residence on the city’s southside at approximately 9.30pm. A man, thought to be in his twenties and known to the couple, was apprehended at the scene.

Neighbours of the couple alerted emergency services after witnessing an incident outside the house. Members of the Armed Support Unit responded to the scene. Paramedics performed CPR on the injured man before rushing both him and his wife to Cork University Hospital for treatment, reports the Irish Mirror.

Sadly, the woman later passed away in hospital. Her husband remains in a serious condition. The younger man was taken to a local garda station in Cork for questioning.

He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and was due to be examined by a doctor yesterday evening.

It is believed that Gardai need to determine whether the man is medically fit to be questioned at this time.

The area was sealed off, with a comprehensive forensic examination set to take place today.

Meanwhile, police have warned members of the public to “not approach” a suspect after launching an urgent manhunt following a stabbing.

Oumar Traore, aged 17, is wanted for questioning after a “violent attack” saw the death of a 19-year-old male in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Yassin Alama was stabbed on Hutton Road at around 5.20pm yesterday (November 16). He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Police say they have made a number of attempts to arrest Traore following the horrific incident. However, they are now calling on the public to help track him down, but warned anyone who sees the suspect to not approach him.

Police say Yassin’s family has been “left absolutely devastated” by the horrific incident as officers are looking to support them.

Jenny Birch, from our Homicide team, said: “This was a violent attack in the street which has sadly resulted in the death of Yassin.

“Yassin’s family have been left absolutely devastated by what has happened, and we are doing everything we can to support them, and to give them answers.

“We need to find and arrest Traore as soon as possible. If anyone sees him, or has information about where he might be, they should not approach him but call us straight away on 999, quoting log 3135 of 16 November.”
