Major motorway closed after ‘critical collision’ sees HGV cross into reverse carriageway

A major motorway remains closed this morning after a lorry swerved across both sides during a horror multi-vehicle collision. The incident happened at around 11.40pm last night, and has now seen the M54 in Shropshire closed westbound between Junction 2 (Wolverhampton) and Junction 3 (Albrighton).

Emergency services are still on the scene, with West Mercia Police in attendance alongside National Highways Traffic Officers, who are assisting with the complex traffic management required.

National Highways also said that the impact “has also affected the eastbound carriageway, where Lane 2 (of 2) is closed due to extensive damage to the central barrier”

No update on those involved in the crash has been given so far.

The spokesman said: “The M54 in Shropshire is closed westbound between J2 (Wolverhampton) and J3 (Albrighton), due to a serious collision involving multiple vehicles which occurred at 23:40 hours (25.11.25) A HGV has crossed over from the eastbound carriageway to the westbound carriageway.

“West Mercia Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also assisting with traffic management. Recovery is ongoing and barrier crews are on scene. The HGV has been righted. The remainder of the traffic within the closure is being released past the scene.

“Once clear the westbound carriageway will remain closed for emergency repairs with lane 2 remaining closed eastbound to assist barrier crews. If this incident impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

The full diversion in place is as follows:

• Road users on the westbound carriageway are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

• Exit M54 at Junction 2 Westbound take 3rd exit onto A449 Northbound.

• Continue on A449 Northbound until Gailey roundabout with A5, take 1st exit onto A5 Westbound

• Continue on A5 Westbound until roundabout with A41, take 1st exit onto A41 Southbound

• Continue on the A41 Southbound to M54 Junction 3.

• At M54 Junction 3 take 3rd exit onto M54 Westbound.
