MIKEY SMITH: 7 unhinged Donald Trump moments as he makes wild threats after Washington capturing
While the troops were fighting for their lives in hospital, Donald Trump’s attention was focused on the alleged shooter – or specifically, his immigration status
Two National Guard troops were brazenly shot in broad daylight a block away from the White House yesterday. They were 20 and 24 years old, and both had taken the oath less than 24 hours before the shooting. While the troops were fighting for their lives in hospital, Donald Trump’s attention was focused on the alleged shooter – or specifically, his immigration status. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan national, living in Washington State, who came into the US as a refugee after the fall of Kabul. Before that, he worked with the CIA. Trump branded him an “animal” and went on to attack all Afghan refugees, and then for some reason, Somalian immigrants in Minnesota, who had nothing to do with the shooting. But of course, there’s more to the story.
Meanwhile, in Trumpworld
- JD Vance made some controversial comments about Thanksgiving
- And also dropped some delicious irony
- Trump banned South Africa from the G20 – at his Miami golf club
Here’s everything you need to know. Happy Thanksgiving.
1. Donald Trump gives measured and sober response to Washington DC shooting. Nah, just kidding
Donald Trump lashed out at Afghan refugees, Joe Biden and for some reason Somali immigrants in Minnesota in an furious rant in response to two National Guard troops being shot in Washington DC last night.
The US President said 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal had been allowed into the country as part of Operation Allies Welcome, following the fall of Kabul in 2021.
“He was flown in by the Biden administration in September 2021,” he said in a statement last night. “On those infamous flights that everybody was talking about. Nobody knew who was coming in. Nobody knew anything about it. His status was extended under legislation signed by President Biden, a disastrous president, the worst in the history of our country.”
He went on to claim, falsely, that 20 million “unknown and unvetted foreigners” had been allowed to enter the US during the Biden Administration, which is not only untrue, it’s mathematically impossible.
2. And of course it’s going to be used as a pretext for Trump to do whatever he wants
“We’re not going to put up with these kind of assaults on law and order by people who shouldn’t even be in our country,” Trump barrelled on. “We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden.
“And we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country. If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them. America will never bend and never yield in the face of terror.”
He also announced another 500 National Guard troops would be joining the 2,200 or so already milling around the streets of DC.
3. There’s just one problem
While it’s true that Rahmanullah Lakanwal came into the country under Operation Allies Welcome in September 2021, that wasn’t the end of his contact with the Department for Homeland Security.
He may have been allowed into the US under Biden, but he was granted asylum by …Trump. Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024, and it was granted in April, seven months ago. While Trump was very much in office.
4. Kash Patel swerved it at a press conference
The FBI Director was asked to clarify the timeline of when the suspect was granted asylum. He replied: “I believe [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem put that out, and that’s a DHS matter and I’ll refer it to them.”
Kristi Noem has not, as far as we can tell, said anything about the suspect’s asylum claim, although her department has confirmed the timeline to various outlets on backgound.
5. JD Vance’s controversial Thanksgiving message: Turkey is bad
Giving a speech to troops at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Vice President JD Vance had a controversial message to convey, especially on Thanksgiving.
“Who really likes — be honest with yourself, who really likes Turkey?” He asked. “You are all full of s**t. Everybody who raised your hands… Turkey doesn’t actually taste that good. Chicken is good all the time.”
Aside from the cursing, Vance is, of course, entirely wrong. Turkey is delicious when cooked properly. By which I mean not, as many Americans do it, deep fried. Cooked sensibly, in an oven, with seasoning and aromatics, for the correct amount of time, with some good meaty stuffing, Turkey is a far superior bird. Chicken is a coward’s meat. Don’t email me, I won’t reply.
6. Vance claims US doesn’t want soldiers who ‘mindlessly follow orders’
Vance went on to claim that he doesn’t just want “people who mindlessly follow orders” in the US military. “We want people who think.”
The White House is currently in a war of words – and possibly prosecutions – against a group of veteran members of congress whose only “crime” is reminding members of the military they don’t have to follow illegal orders.
7. Trump bans South Africa from G20 meeting at his golf club
Trump last night threw his toys out of the international diplomacy pram and banned South Africa from next year’s G20 summit – which is obviously taking place at his golf course in Miami. Because why wouldn’t it be?
It comes after Trump refused to turn up to this week’s summit hosted by South Africa, over bogus claims about the violent persecution of white Afrikaners. South Africa refused to officially hand over as host of the G20 to the US in a ceremony at the summit, after the US chose to appoint a local embassy official as recipient. South Africa saw this as an insult.
The ceremony instead happened at its Foreign Ministry building after the summit “as the United States was not present at the summit,” a statement from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office said. Trump tweeted last night to say the snub was the final straw and ” “Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.” He added: “South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”
