Moment gunman tackled to floor as hero takes weapon at Bondi Beach taking pictures

A brave passerby was seen creeping up behind a crazed gunman and wrestling his firearm off him as the Bondi Beach gun horror unfolded on Sunday, prompting praise from social media users

A brave bystander has been hailed “the hero of Bondi” after wrestling a rifle from one of the gunmen who killed 10 people on a rampage at a Jewish celebration.

Incredible footage shows the unarmed man creep up behind the shooter from a car park at the iconic beauty spot in Sydney, Australia.

Dressed in a white t-shirt, the have-a-go-hero grabs the gunman in a headlock before prising his weapon from him. He then turns the rifle on the attacker and points it at him.

The attacker, dressed in a black t shirt and light coloured trousers, stumbles back and falls over as the heroic member of the public steps towards him.

The gunman then staggers to his feet and walks away from the hero, who then raises his hand before putting the gun down next to a tree.

The unidentified male stepped in as the horror scene unfolded in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Sunday night. Two gunmen had been seen in earlier social media footage firing dozens of shots at beachgoers.

Social media users praised the hero, with one branding him “Australian of the Year” and insisting he should get “free beers for life” and a VIP box at the MCG on Boxing Day for the Ashes Test against England.

Another said: “He should never pay taxes again. Never buy a beer.”

Cops rushed to the scene at around 6.40pm local time as reports emerged of people being shot at the popular beach.

Ten people have been confirmed dead, including a man believed to be one of the shooters. The second alleged shooter is in a critical condition, police said.

A further 11 people are reported to be injured, two of which are police officers.

A Jewish Hanukkah celebration was taking place on the beach. Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, is an eight-day festival of light.

A social media post previously promoted a Chanukah by the Sea event to be held at the Bondi Beach playground. It was advertised as a night of family fun. It is yet to be confirmed if this event was the target.

The death toll means it is the deadliest shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur attack rocked the nation in 1996.

That attack saw 35 people killed and scores more injured when a lone gunmen opened fire at a historic site in Tasmania.

That attack was a turning point, sparking the government to introduce some of the world’s strictest gun control measures.
