Dozens of people were taken to hospital after a mass outbreak of food poisoning broke out – at a sausage festival. Some 80 students and teachers fell ill after scoffing the sausages at a school event in Turkey.

Organisers at the Emine Gönen Secondary School in Kayseri, around 200 miles south east of capital Ankara, flogged the speciality sucuk sandwiches for 100 Turkish Lira (Around £1.80).

But the school fun day turned into a nightmare when staff and pupils became poorly. About 80 people, who reported symptoms of abdominal pain and nausea, sought medical attention at various hospitals, local media reported.

A police investigation has been launched into the incident. Sucuk is a dry, spicy and fermented sausage which is made from beef in Muslim countries across the Middle East, where it is a popular dish.

It can be consumed with eggs as a breakfast meal but is also baked into pastries, tops pizza and used in stews in the country. It is also a popular food in Balkan and central Asian countries, such as Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The horror comes after Italian cops seized thousands of pounds worth of goods from a food festival after a woman was killed by eating contaminated guacamole.

Roberta Pitzalis, 38, died from botulism poisoning in August after eating guacamole from a stand at Fiesta Latina festival in Cagliari, Sardinia.

Eight other festivalgoers were also hospitalised from the disease, including an 11-year-old boy who was placed in intensive care after eating a guacamole-filled taco.

Public health officers raided the South American festival’s headquarters on Monday and discovered approximately £25,000 worth of rice, tomato paste, flour not stored properly.

Despite seizing portions of avocado pulp at the festival itself, officers did not find anymore contaminated guacamole in their raid this week.

Meanwhile in the US, six people died after eating prepared pasta meals that were contaminated with listeria and sold at major grocery chains across the country, federal health officials said.

And in the UK, the have been 19 confirmed cases of food poisoning after customers who ate a carvery at a pub in South Wales became unwell last month.
