Tennis has been left in mourning after a joint statement from the Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) and the ATP confirmed two fans died at the ATP Finals on Monday.

The fans were aged 70 and 78 and passed away during separate medical emergencies at the Inalpi Arena. A statement read: “The FITP and the ATP express their deepest condolences following the tragic passing of two spectators yesterday during the ATP Finals in Turin.

“On-site medical and emergency personnel responded immediately, providing all possible assistance. Despite prompt intervention and subsequent transfer to hospital, unfortunately, both sadly passed away.”

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that one man had fallen ill in the Fan Village, near the arena.

A second spectator was taken ill in the stands during Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz’s match. Reports suggest emergency services responded quickly and stabilised his vital signs.

However, he remained in critical condition when he was transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away.

According to Spanish outlet AS, some fans were left “deeply shaken” by the incidents, and a sombre mood has been cast on the tournament.

Italian fans have flocked to the tournament to catch a glimpse of national hero Jannik Sinner.

Sinner is the defending champion in Turin, and he’s still in contention for the year-end No.1 ranking should be he put up a strong showing.
