Pixar has divided fans after releasing the first teaser trailer for the eagerly anticipated Toy Story 5.

The latest addition to the Toy Story franchise introduces a familiar villain for modern parents – technology – in the form of a tablet called Lilypad.

In the 49 second teaser, existing toys including the likes of Slinky and Mr and Mrs Potato Head – and most interestingly of all Woody – can be seen reacting to the new addition with absolute terror.

‘Hi, there – I’m Lilypad. Let’s play,’ the tablet says after its dramatic unboxing.

Following the release of the teaser trailer, fans were quick to praise Toy Story for tackling the dramatic advances in technology that have taken place in recent years.

‘I’m glad the villain of the new Toy Story is a child’s tablet,’ shared one viewer on X.

Pixar has released the first brief teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 ahead of its June 2026 release and divided fans with the 49-second clip

The new film introduces a familiar villain for modern parents – technology – in the form of a tablet called Lilypad

‘I hope the film conveys how screens eat up a child’s hobbies, interests, literacy, ability to function socially. I hope it provokes millions of parents to think twice before making the iPad a babysitter,’ posted a second.

A third added: ”lilypad isn’t just a toy story character, it’s the struggle. everyone who has children already knows.’;

Elsewhere, a fourth quipped: ‘We went from a child who tortured his toys for fun to a freaking iPad.’

But while the new film’s treatment of technology was praised, the vast majority of fans questioned how Woody had managed to return after he left the home in Toy Story 4 to be an ownerless toy.

‘You better explain why Woody is back, Pixar,’ shared one disgruntled fan.

‘It took me a sec to realise Woody came back. Because in my mind, he never left. Toy Story 3 will always be the true ending for me,’ wrote another.

A third added: ‘Gotta love Woody just randomly being back. No explanation, he’s just here.’

While a fourth joked: ‘I guess Woody is truly in love with Buzz because why is he back LOL.’

Meanwhile, another fan speculated: ‘I think Woody is back because he often visits.’

The film’s synopsis reads: ‘The age of toys is over…?

‘Fans are introduced to the new character Lilypad, a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee that makes Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs exponentially harder when they have to go head to head with the all-new threat to playtime.’

Toy Story 5 is written by Stanton Harris, who has been a part of Toy Story since the release of the first film in 1995, and it is co-directed by Kenna Harris.

They said in a statement: ‘It’s been a hilarious and poignant journey exploring how our favourite team of legacy toys might respond to today’s world of technology, and we’re thrilled to share this first glimpse with audiences.

‘Having the remarkably talented Greta Lee bring Lilypad to life – balancing a playfully antagonistic tone with humor and heart – has been incredible.’

Toy Story 5 will be released on June 19, 2026.
