Thousands of Brits fill Benidorm’s streets for the Spanish metropolis’s well-known fancy costume parade

Thousands of Brits have pulled on their wackiest costumes for Benidorm’s annual fancy dress parade.

A sea of boozy tourists and expats flooded the streets of the British holiday hotspot today.

Set up in the 1990s by the owners of a bar called The Sportsman’s Retreat, the November tradition has only grown in popularity.

An estimated 30,000 people attended this year, with around 9,000 people coming to the city specifically for the colourful festivities.

The party has also spread across the city this year. Parades in years gone by were restricted to Rincón de Loix, the resort area of the city, but have now spread to bars and clubs across Benidorm.

More than a dozen floats are paraded through the streets of Benidorm, and around 50 bars and pubs fling their doors open to welcome revellers.

Costumes this year ranged from outrageous burlesque to the holy attire of the clergy.

Though British holidaymakers have, at times, caught the ire of locals, they were welcomed with open arms this year.

The city council’s events councillor, Jesús Carrobles, told local media: ‘They add a great splash of colour to the city.

‘In Benidorm, we are delighted to welcome everyone who comes and participates in this festival, which grows every year’.

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s Superman! Though, he’s not often seen with a can of Stella Artois in his hand…
