Ex-Wales worldwide star dies as Derby County pay tribute to title winner

Former title winner and Welsh international star Rod Thomas has sadly died at the age of 78.

Derby County paid tribute to their former star with “great sadness” after the ex-defender played over 100 games for the now Championship side.

Thomas was also a member of The Rams’ First Division title-winning side.

Derby County said: “It is with great sadness that Derby County has learned of the passing of its former player Rod Thomas at the age of 78.

“Thomas was a member of the 1974/75 First Division title-winning side, and he attended a 50th anniversary celebration of the achievement earlier this year.

“In total, Thomas played 118 matches for the Rams and scored two goals.

“Derby County’s deepest condolences and thoughts are with Rod’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

As well as playing for Derby County, Thomas was also well known to Swindon Town fans.

Swindon also paid tribute to their former defender and hailed him for leaving a “lasting mark on everyone”.

They said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Rod Thomas.

“Rod was a dedicated and talented footballer whose commitment, character, and love for the game left a lasting mark on everyone. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
