The Daily Star’s world famous lettuce appears to have been immortalised in a new hit book.

In the latest Slow Horses novel, one of the central characters – spook chief Diana Taverner – says, “So don’t think all you need to do is issue a few vague threats and I’ll crumple like last week’s lettuce”.

It’s the most recent instalment in the hit spy series – made famous by Apple TV’s adaptation starring Gary Oldman – since ’Lettuce’ Liz Truss became Britain’s shortest-serving PM back in October 2022.

Ms Truss was famously outlasted by our 60p lettuce after quitting as prime minister in 2022 after 45 days – the shortest spell in history.

The spy tales have been made famous by Apple TV’s adaptation starring Hollywood star Gary Oldman, 67. The new book by Mick Herron, Clown Town, makes a string of references to current events and politicians like Ms Truss and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

It comes after the Daily Star’s Tesco lettuce was recently immortalised by film chiefs. They ruled the livestream of the plucky veg is an iconic piece of history and deserves to be preserved for generations to come.

It was bought by the British Film Institute’s (BFI) National Archive last month.

The footage is part of a digital collection which is bringing 400 major pieces of British online video content into a national collection.

Ellie Groom, BFI National Archive Curator, said at the time: “The Daily Star’s video livestream was a seminal moment in British political history and in the story of online moving image. It was a brilliantly conceived satirical stunt that went viral and beyond, and over the course of a few short days as pressure mounted on Liz Truss to resign, it had a real influence.”

Oscar winner Gary plays foul-mouthed spy boss Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses which recently aired its fifth series. His role sees him take charge of a group of spies banished from MI5’s headquarters.

Fans of the show include Prince William, ex-PM Theresa May and former head of MI6 Sir Richard Moore.
