Cricket star who performed with England legends is charged with possessing machete and stealing automotive

A former cricketer who played alongside England legends has been charged with possession of a machete and stealing a car.  

Ex-Warwickshire county bowler Recordo Gordon, 34, who played alongside Test stars Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, was arrested by police in Birmingham earlier this month.  

Gordon – who played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club between 2011 and 2016 –  was pulled over by West Midland Police for driving a suspected stolen car in the Erdington area of the city.

Inside the vehicle offers seized a machete.

Now, the former cricketer has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of offensive weapon.

He will appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court next month.

A police spokesperson said: ‘A man has been charged with multiple offences after he was arrested by our Op Skybridge officers.

‘The Birmingham Crime Team were patrolling around Sutton Road, Erdington, when they stopped a suspected stolen car.

‘A 34-year-old man was arrested and a machete was seized after being found in the car.

‘Recordo Gordon has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of offensive weapon.

‘The 34-year-old will be appearing before Birmingham Magistrates Court next month.

‘Op Skybridge officers continue to carry out proactive enforcement across Birmingham, where they target offenders and disrupt crime.

‘Deploying to different areas of the city, they have already secured some significant results.’

Jamaican-born Gordon moved to the UK when he was seven-years-old.

A talented bowler, he was identified by Warwickshire as one to watch when he was 15. 

He joined the Bears when he was 20, making his debut in a match against Oxford MCCU in 2013.

He spent five years at the Birmingham-based club and was part of the Bears teams that won the T20 Blast in 2014 and One-Day Cup in 2016. 

Gordon said at the time of his departure: ‘I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last five years representing my home county and playing with so many fantastic cricketers.

‘I’d like thank Warwickshire for giving me the opportunity to become a professional cricketer.’

His most recent cricket signing was in November 2020 for Audley Cricket Club in Stoke-on-Trent.
