A light aircraft has crashed near Waterford Airport in Ireland, prompting a swift response from police and emergency services. The plane came down just before 1pm today with four people believed to have been on board.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to CorkBeo: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a collision involving a light aircraft at a location near Tramore, Co. Waterford, which occurred at approximately 12:50pm this afternoon, Thursday 20th November 2025. As this is a live and ongoing operation, no further information is available at this time,” reports the Express.

The lightweight aircraft, belived to be a Vulcanair, is said to have been en route to Beziers in France before declaring an emergency approximately 100 miles off the south east coast, on a flightpath that would have taken him towards the west coast of France and then on to the Mediteranean coast.

The plane then turned around and attempted to make it make it to airport at Waterford.

As it crossed back over the coast the plane began to lose height rapidly and it came down in a field. Flightradar24 say the aircraft registered as EI-HPY was on its way to Béziers Cap d’Agde Airport after taking off from Sligo Airport.

However, the twin-engined plane turned around approximately 50 kilometres off the southern coast of Ireland and headed back in the direction of Waterford Airport.

Local reports suggest at least one person may have died in the crash – however, this has yet to be officially confirmed.

An air accident investigation has been launched by the Department of Transport following today’s incident.

The investigation will be handled by the Department’s Air Accident Investigation Unit with support from the Irish Aviation Authority

A spokesperson for the IAA told CorkBeo: “We are aware of an accident involving an aircraft in Co. Waterford. The Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport (AAIU) is investigating the incident with the relevant emergency services.

“The AAIU is responsible for investigating accidents and serious incidents as defined in ICAO Annex 13 and associated implementing regulations. The Irish Aviation Authority will support the AAIU in its investigation into the accident”

Locals living in and around Waterford and Tramore have expressed their worry over the incident as they hope everyone on the flight is safe.

Sinn Fein TD for Waterford, Conor D. McGuinness told CorkBeo: “Hearing reports of a twin engine plane crashing just outside Waterford City. Praying for the best outcome.

“Road closures in the vicinity of Waterford Airport. Please give our emergency services the space to do their work.”
