Poundland set to have shut over 100 shops as new wave of closures introduced

Poundland has revealed plans for another round of store closures this winter, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline the chain.

The budget retailer is set to have closed over 100 UK shops by early next year, following the launch of its restructuring programme.

On Friday (December 5), it announced that an additional 14 stores will be shut by early February, in addition to the 19 already slated for closure in the coming months.

These stores have initiated clearance sales, offering up to 40% off on everything from homeware and groceries to clothing and beauty products.

Poundland had previously announced the closure of another 40 stores where landlords had chosen to end leases.

This comes on top of the 57 stores that were closed by the end of September, as Poundland targeted its least profitable outlets.

The company anticipates that the total number of UK stores will have reduced from around 800 at the start of the restructuring process, to between 650 and 700 once completed.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s UK country manager, commented: “We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.”

He added: “The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.

“And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
