LUNCH: Australia 1-17

Tim Lane

‘Lunch will be taken on day three, England needed to fight back and they showed some fight. Initially with the bat and then an early wicket with the ball. Australia at lunch, the leaders 102. Jake Weatherald the batsmen dismissed for Australia. – The lead is 102. Archer looking a little tired, sore and sorry, did well with the bat, a maiden half century in Test match wicket earlier and Carse with the wicket.’

Despite a decent morning for England, Australia have reached lunch 102 ahead with nine wickets in hand – a very strong position. In fact, it’s not far off the advantage England held at lunch on day two at Perth, before their batting performed an impersonation of a pack of cards. It will be a surprise if Australia follow suit this afternoon, and yet it’s England’s only hope of digging themselves out of the hole they created yesterday.

An early wicket for England but the reality is that they can’t afford any Aussies to bat big if they are to have any chance of salvaging this Test match.

Over 4: Australia 1-16

Runs for Australia off some loose Carse deliveries. One more over to go before lunch

Justin Langer

‘Carse has got to be better than this, his first over was brilliant, he bowled two short balls and now this was smacked away for four. Needs to be better, the pressure must stay on Australia, this gets away, Marnus Labuschagne, he has been batting well all summer and he would love that just before lunch.’

Over 3: Australia 1-9

Marnus Labuschagne out in the middle now, maiden over from Archer

Over 2: Australia 1-9

Very costly over for Australia, losing a wicket that they could have kept. England applying the blowtorch and fighting their way back into this match

WICKET! Weatherald 1 LBW Carse

No player review, Weatherald trudges off and Australia are 1-8. The early breakthrough England needed. However replays are showing it was pitching outside off. Weatherald would have survived with a review. Aussies have left one out there, will it cost them?

Well done to Brydon Carse for finally pitching it up, but it seemed obvious to the naked eye that that one might have pitched outside leg stump. That’s where Jake Weatherald needed a bit of help from Travis Head, but none was forthcoming, and England have an early breakthrough.

Over 1: Australia 0-8

A mixed bag from Jofra Archer, fresh off his record stand with the bat. Starts with intent, nearly has Head trapped on his stumps, but also sends down a wayward delivery that beats the ‘keeper and gifts the Aussies four runs. Another wide, another no ball, not what England needs.

Innings Break: England trail Australia by 85 runs

Daily Mail Cricket Writer Oliver Holt at Adelaide Oval

A better start to the morning than England could have hoped for. Stokes, Archer and Tongue added 73 runs for the last two wickets but the deficit to Australia’s first innings total is still 85. It is still a mountain to climb.

And that’s it. England are out for 286 in the first innings, but that rearguard stand from Stokes and Archer have given the tourists a hope.

Over 87: England 9-286

Tongue gets a lucky boundary that is chalked up as leg byes and Archer is trying to launch the ball into orbit, it won’t be long now, but in the meantime England keep closing that gap

Over 86: England 9-279

Four more valuable runs, each one worth its weight in gold for England

Over 85: England 9-275

The huge wicket of Stokes and a big shout on Tongue, England are holding on for grim life now, still trailing by 96
