A police officer was taken to hospital after being bitten on the arm during an incidents at a city centre restaurant. Merseyside Police were called to Burger and Sauce on Ranelagh Street just before 2.15am on Friday, December 26, following reports of a man behaving aggressively towards security personnel.
Officers arrived at the scene and arrested a man on suspicion of assault. During the arrest, the suspect allegedly assaulted a police officer, inflicting serious bite wounds to her arm.
The officer was rushed to hospital for treatment and is now recuperating at home. Johny Opoku, 28, from Hatton Garden in Liverpool, has been charged with robbery and section 18 wounding with intent to resist arrest.
He has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, January 26, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Assistant Chief Constable Jennifer Wilson expressed her outrage and said: “To attack a police officer or member of staff when they are just doing their job and protecting others is absolutely despicable.”
She further added, “Officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public from people intent on causing harm in our communities.
“They go to work each day knowing that they might have to step into a situation that most people would run away from, but it will never be acceptable to use violence, aggression or abuse towards officers.”
Wilson concluded by warning: “When members of the public cross that line, they can expect to face justice for their actions.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police quoting reference 25001050920.
