DROPPED! Ben Duckett gives Weatherald a life
He should’ve caught that.
Duckett got two hands to a poor shot from Weatherald, and while it wasn’t exactly straightforward, Test players should be able to grab those.
The Aussie tried to pull Carse and made a mess of it. Duckett had to go down sharply to his right but he’ll be filthy on himself for that one.
Chance! Weatherald edges it
Joe Root got a hand to that edge, but it was just a smidgin too high.
Weatherald was trying to cut another short, wide ball and was a little late to it.
England on the wrong length, Australia 0-26 after five overs
Now Head is given way too much width and he throws the bat at that short ball from Carse, feet off the ground, and it races to the rope.
England have been guilty of failing to find the right length throughout the series and it’s happening again.
Early days, but they need to pitch it up more and try to make Head and Weatherall drive with the ball moving and the bounce throwing up the odd surprise.
Head cuts loose, Australia 0-21
Travis Head has gone four, two, four, with the last of those a beautiful shot square of the wicket.
Potts has upped his speed to 135kmh but it’s not helping, Head pulls him square for another four and that’s 14 off the over. He’s pitching it far too short and the opener is lapping it up.
Bad weather on its way
The rain radar is showing a storm front heading towards the SCG from the west in what looks remarkably like what fans had to deal with yesterday.
We’ll keep you posted…
Weatherald risks it all to get off the mark, Australia 0-7 after three overs
Weatherald is off the mark with a boundary off Carse’s bowling and it’s risky as all get out, an all-or-nothing cut shot.
He looks incredibly shaky out there.
Matthew Potts takes the new ball, Australia 0-3
His second ball is on an ideal length to Head.
Potts is far from express at around 130kmh but this track has been misbehaving for a while and it sure looks like Weatherald is wary of it.
Head plays a risky half-pull, half-scoop shot, lofting it over cover for two runs. That had next to no power behind it.
Nervy Weatherald struggles, Australia 0-1 after one over
Weatherald looks nervy as he tries to get off the mark under a fair bit of pressure.
There’s a big shout on the fifth ball of the over, but it comes to nothing, before Weatherald tries to cut one late, but comes closer to chopping it onto his stumps.
Carse to Head to begin the innings after early tea break
And straight away, the English quick gets one to come back in to the Aussie.
Tea has been taken early, which isn’t great for England. The Lions won’t get to take advantage of the often nervy period batters experience just before and after the break.
Root gives England a chance
The Mail’s cricket correspondent Lawrence Booth likes what he sees…
England lose their last four for nine, including Joe Root, who walked off to a standing ovation after making 160, but they’re in the game with 384, and the second new ball did plenty for Australia after lunch. It’s more than looked likely at 57 for three and 229 for five, and for that they have Root to thank. A few of the Australian players shook his hand as he left the field, and rightly so: that was a superb knock, and he’s given England a chance.
WICKET! England all out for 384 as Neser gets Tongue for a duck
Neser follows up a brutal bouncer with a cracking delivery that smashes into the stumps.
Travis Head and Jake Weatherald look sure to be challenged when they get out there in a few minutes.
‘A lot of runs on a wicket that’s starting to play up’
That’s Ricky Ponting summing up how England are placed with the deck starting to show a fair bit of life.
