Highlander wowed movie-goers in the eighties with its century-hopping action and iconic tagline ‘There can be only one’ but there’ll soon be two… as we get an exclusive first glimpse of its reboot!
The Tower of London has seen its fair share of bloodshed but its historic setting this week hosts an epic conflict it’s never seen before – immortal warriors who can only be defeated by losing their heads are duelling through the centuries to become the lone survivor.
Fans of the Highlander movie that stunned audiences in 1986 will be excited at the site as the reboot is now underway and we’ve got a thrilling first glimpse from shooting at the heart of historic London.
The action pic’s new hero is Henry Cavill, already famous as The Witcher and Superman, who’s been snapped looking rugged as he chats with his co-star and fellow Brit Jeremy Irons.
Our exclusive first peek at the new Highlander reveals Cavill in an all-leather getup reminiscent of the costume the brooding French-American actor Christopher Lambert donned in the original movie.
The hunky star was snapped in a leather duster chatting to Irons, dressed in a dark trench coat and sporting a Van Dyke-style beard.
Movie fans seem assured of an action-packed adventure as the lead actor, or his stunt double, was seen falling off a motorbike. With a safety rope attached to a harness under his coat, the figure heads under the wheels of an SUV.
The iconic movie’s reboot is being directed by Chad Stahelski, whose smash hit John Wick films reflect his background as a martial artist and stuntman.
Stahelski was the stunt double for Keanu Reeves in the Matrix movies before he directed him as the enigmatic contract killer in the action franchise.
Fans seem sure of a feast of acrobatic action in the new Highlander, which began shooting on January 28 in Scotland. The schedule was pushed back several months after Cavill suffered an injury during rehearsals.
Highlander is the story of Connor MacLeod, a medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman called Ramirez, played in the reboot by Russell Crowe, he must battle other immortals across the centuries.
The famous tagline ‘There can be only one’ refers to the contest’s brutal winner-takes-all format. Only one of the immortals can survive, eliminating all the others by chopping off their heads. The lone survivor will then know all things in the “quickening”.
Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Marisa Abela, Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang, Drew McIntyre, Siobhán Cullen, Jun Jong-seo, Nassim Lyes, and Kevin McKidd will all co-star in the movie.
Michael Finch wrote the script and Dan Laustsen is the cinematographer. Tyler Bates is in charge of the score, which will reportedly feature some of the original Queen soundtrack.
Amazon MGM Studios is set to release the film in 2027.
