All eyes were on the Prince and Princess of Wales as they made a surprise appearance in the wake of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s arrest. The 2026 BAFTAs on Sunday marked the couple’s first public outing together since the arrest, with William maintaining a calm exterior throughout – even when faced with a heckler who questioned if “the monarchy was in peril”.

Experts suggest that the future king adopted a protective stance as he walked the red carpet with his wife at the Royal Festival Hall. The princess looked breathtaking in a custom-made Gucci chiffon gown in shades of lilac, complemented by a burgundy velvet belt, whilst William opted for a smart burgundy tuxedo.

Despite the controversies surrounding their extended family, the parents-of-three radiated happiness as they arrived at the star-studded event.

The royal duo certainly added a significant touch of glamour to the occasion, which also attracted celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothy Chalamet, Jessie Buckley and Emma Stone. However, they also displayed “subtle signs of suppressed or masked tension”, according to body language expert Judi James, reports the Mirror.

“Their arms hang freely at their sides to suggest assertive confidence, but William’s right hand appears to show some tension and fiddling of the fingers,” she disclosed to the Mirror. “His hair and beard have been trimmed closer than usual in a more fashionable look.”

Judi continued: “When Kate and William perform their red carpet smiles here there appears to be some slight edge-to-edge clenching of the teeth, hinting at an air of resolve rather than a completely relaxed approach to the event.”

However, she observed: “Their red carpet appearance shows William and Kate at their A-list best, upstaging the Hollywood celebrities with their own display of dazzling glamour and elegance.

“The subtly matching outfits radiate messages of being one bonded unit and a royal power couple, and Kate in particular looks keen to signal regal confidence and unflappable stoicism.”

Indeed, the couple were spotted having hushed exchanges. According to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Kate was mesmerised by the crowd and told her husband “Look at the people!” before waving at them and saying, “Hey!” William then advised his wife to “watch your step” as they continued making their way inside.

Throughout the evening, William seemed to hint at the difficulties his family are presently facing. The prince, who alongside Kate has distanced himself from Andrew, admitted he is not “calm” at present whilst explaining why he hasn’t yet watched one of the award season’s most acclaimed films – Hamnet.

William revealed that Kate had viewed the deeply moving film on Saturday evening and found herself in “floods of tears”. When asked whether he’d watched it himself, he said: “I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment. I will save it.”

Hamnet delves into the tragic childhood demise of Shakespeare’s son Hamnet and the profound grief experienced by his parents.

“I thought it was a bad idea, actually,” Kate joked about watching the film before the ceremony. “[I] Ended up with very puffy eyes. It was so beautifully shot. The music as well. The score is fantastic.”

William confessed he’s yet to see Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, whilst describing the vampire thriller Sinners as “a bit dark”. “I have seen One Battle After Another, that was very good,” he observed.

“We were not expecting it to start the way it did.”

Kate, meanwhile, revealed that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are cultivating a growing interest in film. Emily Stillman, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, mentioned to her: “Last time I saw you you were pregnant with George and you were doing your Harry Potter spells.”

She was alluding to the royal couple’s 2013 visit, along with Prince Harry, to the Warner Brothers studios in Hertfordshire, where they toured the Harry Potter set. “I was saying how much the children would love to look around,” Kate responded.

“They love the idea of going behind the scenes and finding out how it all happens.”

She also praised the studios for “showcasing all the different career opportunities” within the film industry.

Reports suggest that William, who dismissed a heckler upon his arrival at the BAFTAs questioning if “the monarchy was in peril,” appeared “calm and composed, but rather serious” during the event.
