The Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square was defaced in the early hours with pro-Palestine slogans including ‘Zionist war criminal’ and ‘Stop the Genocide’
A Winston Churchill statue has been vandalised overnight. The monument in London’s Parliament Square was targeted in the early hours with graffiti including “Zionist war criminal”, “Stop the Genocide”, “Never again is Now” and “Globalise the Intifada”.
The bronze memorial to the former British Prime Minister, positioned just metres from the Houses of Parliament, was erected in 1973. The pro-Palestine messages daubed on the base and figure of the statue also seem to feature the words “Greetings from the Hague” written in Dutch, reports the Mirror.
Photographs captured last night reveal heritage wardens trying to cover the vandalism on the monument’s base with black plastic sheeting, which also included the red invertedd triangle – a symbol now associated with terror group Hamas to target Israeli and Jewish people with.
These Heritage Wardens are employed by the Greater London Authority for “monitoring the condition of and activities” at Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square Gardens, according to a 2016 FOI request.
An eyewitness reported that the location has been sealed off and cleaning operations are currently underway.
Antisemitism expert Fiona Sharpe posted on social media: “They object to the fight against Hitler to stop the slaughter of Jews but support Hamas, with their red triangle, who perpetrated the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Their message couldn’t be clearer. Kill more Jews.”
And fellow expert Alex Hearn wrote: “They see defeating the Nazis as a crime. On the statue itself you can see the Hamas red triangle and ‘Free Palestine’. But it’s not about Palestinians and does nothing for them. These people hate Britain.”
The Met Police has been contacted for a comment.
