When it comes to supplements, the options can be overwhelming, making it difficult to determine the best ones to suit your needs. However, one leading voice in health has pinpointed the essential supplements for both men and women, particularly in terms of prioritising hormonal health.

During an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steve Bartlett, bestselling health author Dr Mindy Pelz shared her expert opinion on the matter. When asked about her top supplement recommendations, she didn’t hesitate.

“For women, the most crucial supplement is magnesium,” she stated. “Magnesium plays a role in producing every single hormone in the body.”

Magnesium is involved in numerous bodily processes, with the NHS noting that it helps convert food into energy, maintains normal muscle and nerve function, and supports healthy bones. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), magnesium participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including those that regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Some studies suggest that magnesium may also help alleviate symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome and improve sleep quality, although further research is needed. In contrast, Dr Pelz recommends a different mineral for men. “For men, I believe the most important supplement for hormones is zinc, as it helps produce testosterone,” she said.

Zinc is vital for immune function and cell development, with the Office of Dietary Supplements stating that it is essential for DNA synthesis and reproductive health. A deficiency in zinc has been linked to lower testosterone levels in men.

Research published in the journal Nutrition found that even a mild zinc deficiency in older men was associated with significantly lower testosterone levels, highlighting the importance of the mineral for male hormonal health. Additionally, the NHS notes that zinc plays a crucial role in wound healing and helps the immune system fight off infections.

Experts stress that whilst supplements can support overall health, they should not replace a balanced diet. The NHS advises anyone considering taking new supplements to consult with their GP or pharmacist first, especially those with underlying health conditions or taking regular medication.
