Cyprus has closed its airspace over fears of a ‘suspicious object’ as a flight from Greece was forced to turn back and the country’s second largest airport was evacuated
Cyprus has been forced to shut its airspace this morning due to concerns over a “suspicious object”. Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis declared that the airspace had been temporarily closed following the detection of a suspicious object in the airspace near Lebanon.
He posted on X: “A possible suspicious object has been detected in the airspace near Lebanon. For precautionary reasons, all appropriate measures have been taken by the competent authorities to investigate the incident and, if required, to address it. An update on the outcome will follow.”
The exact nature of the object, which was picked up on radar near the southern approach paths over Cyprus, has not yet been confirmed.
Greek F16 fighter jets stationed on the island were dispatched as part of the response to the alert amid broader Middle East tensions.
A flight this morning from Greece was forced to return to Athens. This incident occurred just two days after Paphos International Airport in Cyprus was hastily evacuated following reports of a potential drone threat in the Paphos area, reports the Express.
The country’s second largest airport was instructed to carry out an immediate and complete evacuation after an unidentified drone was detected within the facility’s restricted airspace.
