Marlene Alvarenga’s car was seen flipped over after an accident on her way to her children’s school

The wife of former Premier League star Nelson Semedo has been rushed to hospital after a car accident in Turkey. Marlene Alvarenga was reportedly on her way to pick her children up from school when the accident happened.

Former Wolves and Barcelona right-back Semedo left Molineux over the summer after five years. He moved to Istanbul, joining Fenerbahce on a free transfer.

According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, Alvarenga was not behind the wheel for the accident on the Northern Marmara Motorway, to the north of Istanbul. Reports indicate that the driver transporting her lost control of the vehicle, which can be seen flipped onto its side in footage from the incident.

Semedo, 32, joined his wife at the hospital after learning of the crash. She is said to have suffered minor injuries in the incident.

The footballer and his wife have two children together, a daughter and a son. “We are saddened to learn of the traffic accident involving Marlene Semedo, the wife of our football player Nelson Semedo, and we send our best wishes to her and her family,” his club said in a statement.

Semedo picked up an injury during Fenerbahce’s most recent match. The club confirmed he suffered medial ligament damage after a match against Antalyaspor.

The Portugal international was forced off just 20 minutes into the clash, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Domenico Tedesco’s team remain unbeaten in the league after 24 games but are only in second place, four points adrift of Galatasaray.

He has also been a regular for the club in Europe, where Fener were beaten by Benfica in the Champions League play-offs before reaching the knockout play-offs in the Europa League, losing 4-2 on aggregate to Nottingham Forest.

Semedo joined Fenerbahce on a two-year deal over the summer as then-manager Jose Mourinho oversaw a rebuild. Mourinho was sacked in August after that Champions League exit, though, with Tedesco taking over.

Fenerbahce have confirm manager Tedesco will be absent from this week’s cup tie against Gaziantep. The German boss is “undergoing treatment for a severe infection,” per a club statement.

Victory over Gaziantep would ensure Fenerbahce reach the quarter-finals of the cup. The two teams are level after three group stage games, with Gaziantep ahead on goals scored, though the two best third-placed sides will also progress.
