A former prisoner who served two years alongside Ghislaine Maxwell claims the disgraced socialite was “very nasty” behind bars and “f*****g hated” by prison staff.

Raven Johnson, who is using a pseudonym, was locked up on drug charges at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee from November 2023 to November 2025.

Johnson said Maxwell jumped food queues, barely washed, and even demanded special treatment during religious services. Maxwell allegedly flew into a rage after spotting inmates watching the Starz series “Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?” on television and frequently clashed with staff over petty issues.

Though Maxwell was labelled “trash” by fellow prisoners for being a sex offender, she ran a 12-week law class and assisted inmates with filing motions. Johnson said she never mentioned Jeffrey Epstein or the Royal Family.

Johnson, 47, said: “This lady, her sense of entitlement was just ridiculous. Prison staff – they f***ing hated her. She filed over 800 complaints in one year. She could file a complaint, and things are going to change.

“There could be 50 or 60 people standing in the chow hall line. She’s walked past me several times. People just look at her like, ‘Oh, whatever. It’s Maxwell. This lady worked out every day, but rarely showered.”

The fallen socialite’s religious practices became another source of conflict, it is alleged. Serving as the chief orderly in the prison chapel, Johnson observed Maxwell’s efforts to dominate even the most basic ceremonies.

When Maxwell insisted on pouring her own ceremonial grape juice during Jewish services, Johnson said she declined.

She reportedly told Maxwell: “You’re not coming into this kitchen. You don’t work here. I don’t care who you are. You don’t shower. So I highly doubt that you’re going to wash your hands. You’re not coming in here.”

She said Maxwell then rang her solicitor, who contacted someone in Washington, D. C., eventually compelling the prison to supply Maxwell with her own individual grape juice containers.

Maxwell then seemed to discover her calling teaching fundamental law classes in the prison’s education wing. Johnson, from Knoxville, Tennessee, had enrolled in a law course to earn credits that might shorten her sentence, and Maxwell was the tutor.

She said: “She was pretty knowledgeable. She knew her stuff. I don’t know how or what made her qualified to teach the class, but she knew her stuff. She was actually a fairly good teacher.”

The course ran for approximately 12 weeks, lasting one hour each week, during which Maxwell is said to have advised inmates on the proper way to file motions.

Johnson claimed that due to Maxwell being a convicted sex offender, she was regarded as “trash” and amongst “the lowest of the low” by her fellow prisoners.

She said: “People don’t look at you as if you’re actually even human. You’re less than. If you have crimes against children, you’re shit.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you have or who you are in the real world, people aren’t going to respect you.” For this reason, the insider revealed, Maxwell’s social circle was limited.

Johnson alleged that Maxwell’s nearest confidante was “a murderer, this lady that murdered her whole family,” whilst another associate “had really bad child sex charges and made videos of her daughter.”

She recounted a particular episode where Maxwell became agitated after witnessing a programme about her life on television.

According to Johnson, there was a weekend when the Starz network broadcast a three-part miniseries entitled “Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?”.

She said: “She was pissed because we had it on every single TV And when she came in from the rec yard after working out and seeing that shit on TV, she just started going bananas.”

Johnson reported she branded fellow prisoners “blooming idiots,” demanding, “Can you find something better to do?”.

The insider also revealed that external focus on Maxwell caused disruption throughout the entire prison. She said helicopters would hover low above the facility attempting to capture photographs of Maxwell, forcing authorities to suspend routine activities.

Johnson also recounted a distinct incident the day following Maxwell’s testimony, when a yellow aircraft reportedly circled the establishment towing a banner that condemned her.

She said: “We would all have to go on lockdown and it’d all be because people were trying to get pictures of Maxwell. The helicopter pulled this long-ass banner and literally flew circles around the prison for a couple hours.

“It’s federal property, so there’s no fly zone. We got locked down that day because of that. Ghislaine didn’t acknowledge it. She didn’t say anything.”

Johnson added: “I mean, I’m sure she had to have some level of embarrassment even with the people she believed were beneath her.”

The tipping point arrived when Maxwell came back from delivering her evidence to discover her cell entirely torn apart.

Johnson said: “A bunch of inmates ran through her shit and took everything she owned, all of her clothes, all of her shoes, all of her commissary.” Despite Maxwell’s subsequent assertions about prison being scary, the insider rejected her concerns.

She said: “Prison is not as dangerous as she made it out to be,” calling Maxwell’s statements about inmates being beaten for $25 worth of commissary “an absolute lie”.

In August 2025, Maxwell was moved from FCI Tallahassee to a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. She was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in 2022 for sex trafficking.
