A fire broke out at a high-rise building in Manhattan near the route of the St Patrick’s Day Parade, with thick smoke billowing from the building near Madison Avenue
A blaze erupted at a towering building in Manhattan on Tuesday morning, close to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade route.
The procession, set to commence around 11am on Tuesday, draws millions of spectators. Footage and images from the scene revealed dense plumes of smoke pouring from a structure near Madison Avenue and East 43rd Street.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said that flames had ignited within the HVAC system of a high-rise commercial property. The inferno occurred at 6 East 43rd Street. The parade’s commencement appeared unaffected as the FDNY posted pictures of FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums preparing to march. “It’s almost time,” the post read.
The smoke dissipated shortly before 11am on Tuesday, though multiple fire engines remained visible in the vicinity.
An alert was issued on X just after 10am warning residents to “expect traffic delays, road closures, mass transit disruptions and emergency personnel” in the area.
Residents were urged to seek alternative routes. The fire erupted near assembly points for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, which gathers along Vanderbilt Avenue and surrounding streets.
The parade then proceeds with thousands marching up Fifth Avenue from East 43rd Street to East 79th Street.
